Komische Oper - Anatevka

Project type

Opera

Date

2027

Anatevka is as much a part of the Komische Oper Berlin's DNA as almost no other musical: Walter Felsenstein's original East German production was performed an incredible 500 times. When Barrie Kosky revived the work in 2017, it was met with great acclaim. The New York Times, for example, wrote of Kosky's production: "This is surely the most convincing – and least clichéd – Anatevka performance imaginable."

In the shtetl of Anatevka, all life strictly adheres to Jewish tradition. But the milkman Tevye struggles with it. And with his God. And with the love-struck stubbornness of his three eldest daughters – until pogroms threaten the lives of the small village community… Between humor and human suffering,

Anatevka unfolds one of the most life-affirming tragicomedies of the 20th century, a tale of love entanglements and marriage.
